About the Atmos Negev

The Atmos Negev system is a self-contained thermosiphon domestic hot water system which is unique in its compact construction. Measuring only 1.2m x 1.2m x 160mm deep it can be installed in any location which is exposed to the sun. It heats up the cold water feeding the domestic hot water supply from the sunshine, thus reducing the fossil fuel required to provide hot water and reducing your fuel cost and carbon emissions.

Construction: The Atmos Negev is an 85 litre storage tank manufactured in food grade polymer material, which is resistant to bacterial growth and limescale deposits. The tank is insulated to minimise heat loss with foam injected insulation material. The flat plate solar collector is made of clear polycarbonate, which permits the sun’s heat rays to pass through, but is strong enough to resist hail, storms or stones landing on its surface. There is no need for an additional hot water tank in the house.

Modular Construction; Depending on the hot water requirement of the household, multiple Atmos Negev panels can be installed together.

No planning permission required: With a depth of only 16cm, the Atmos Negev meets permitted planning regulations requiring solar panels to be no more than 20cm above the roof line. It can be mounted on a sloping roof (minimum slope 25 degrees) above the tiles, or it can be “in-roof”, that is mounted on the roof timbers and surrounded by tiles. It can also be mounted on the ground or on a flat roof using the proprietary mounting frame.

Frost, freeze and Legionella (FFL) protection: The FFL kit provides frost and freeze protection by means of a frost thermostat and a 12V dc pump. When the outdoor temperature drops below 10 deg C, the pump comes on briefly to deliver warm water to maintain the pipework and tank at a minimum of 10 deg so that freezing cannot occur. Where no other heat source exists an electric immersion heater is available to provide the small amount of heat required for frost protection or to heat the tank up to the required temperature in winter. Legionella protection is provided utilising a timer which can be set to come on at regular intervals (normally once a week) . This turns on the pump and delivers hot water from the household hot water system or the electric immersion heater to heat the tank up to 60 deg C. This is a well-proven method to kill off any possible Legionella bacteria.

Reliability and maintenance: Thermosiphon systems are very simple because the solar collector and the storage tank are integrated into one unit. They work by natural convection which heats the water directly so a heat transfer circulation pump is not required, and best of all there is no glycol (anti-freeze) in the system which is a nasty smelly substance. The only mechanical part that could go wrong is the FFL pump, but that runs for only a fraction of its design life and so is very unlikely to fail, and in any case, the system will still work without it. Because the system does not rely on any mechanical parts to function, it is highly reliable and virtually maintenance free

Renewable Heat Incentive funding:  As at July 2019 the system is awaiting approval for RHI so it is not yet eligible, but check with Atmos to find out the latest position.  However bear in mind that in order to obtain the RHI, the complete installation must be carried out by an MCS registered installer, which will cost a good deal more because the RHI scheme is complex. Because the Atmos Negev is so simple to install, all it needs is a competent plumber with an unvented qualification, which should cost a good deal less.

Manufacture and Certification: The Atmos Negev system was developed in Israel to answer the need for an affordable, easy to install, maintenance-free and sustainable solution for water heating. The unique polymer-based system overcomes the problems of existing solar thermal systems such as corrosion, calcium (limescale) deposits and glass breakage. It was launched in 2011 and has a proven reliability record. The system is manufactured under ISO9001 certification and has been tested and approved under the European standard EN12976 (applicable in the UK) for solar thermal systems.

Installation

The simplicity of thermosiphon systems means Atmos Negev installation only requires a plumber with “unvented hot water” qualification. With a reasonable understanding of plumbing and a supply of common sense, installation can be DIY.
